  1. I Love You More Than Anyone – The Imaginations.
One of my favourite and most cherished pieces of the ‘black stuff’.

  2. here’s a suggestion (more a plea)…. add the date of playing to the track list…. it would help me with my project!!

  3. “Not making time”… Of course I understand. In fact, it amazes me how often themusicologist manages to stick to self-imposed dead-lines.

P.S. while trawling through this and the other original pages I’m taken by the amazing growth/dynamic of themusicologist since conception…. keep it coming (within reason!!

    1. thanks for the understanding, the valued input and comments. You’re right it has grown and taken on a ‘life’ of it’s own. I would like to take the credit but to be honest it’s the universal language that is driving. themusicologist is just hitching a ride…

  4. My pleasure regarding input, but input’s a two-way street…. no inspiration, no input! And, believe me, whatever drives it…. themusicologist site inspires!!!

Leaving anything/everything “Mod/Modernist out because of my obvious preference, my favorites – in no particular order – in 2008 were………..

    #223 – #233 communication.
10 masterpieces… the theme a musical/textual negotiation through the minefield of the heart…heartbreakingly so!

#191 – #203 The Teachings Of Billionaire Yen Tzu.
Music-wise… straight from the heart, text-wise… I’m still visiting it, learning from it, and working on it.

    #204 – #210, #212 – #215, #216 – #220 Alternativesoundtrack3 (12 Angry Men).
Top dialogue combined with perfect musical balance/counterpoint. I have the feeling it was the hardest theme yet… an odyssey if you don’t mind me saying… I was sweating along with your good self to get to the end… am I right?

    #134 – #140 TheGood,Bad&theUgly Alternative Soundtrack.
“Pucker” sums it up dialogue-wise and “blinding” is the word that catches the musical experience.

    #169 – #178 alternativesoundtrack2.. Quadrophenia (with diologue).
Okey sorry. I know I said I wasn’t gonna include anything “Mod” in my picks of 2008… but this just had to be included.

    #114 – #120 Jamboree and #121 – #127 SocialCommentaryWeek.
So many excellent examples of “the troubadour” living up to his/her social responsibility (I included “jamboree” in this due to one outstanding example of a real “troubadour” i.e. Gill Scott Heron – B-Movie).

And before I go on and on and on I have to make a special citation and plea on behalf of the sixartist, sixtune, sixweekspecial…. when’s the next one!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Have a very merry Christmas

    1. dialogue…rate it.

yes the ‘communication’ nailed what music means and says for me.

Yen Tzu..had to fit the brother’s teachings into a theme. although I say ‘fit’ it is his teachings that have been an inspiration and guide. no more so than at that time on the journey.

12 Angry…odyssey sums it up in a word. sticking to 1957 was a challenge but one I was determined to finish.

funny you mention the six artist as I have just been inspired by brother Otis to be the next candidate so listen out for that one sometime in the near future.

      Social Commentary…personal favourite.

      nice..merry christmas to you too

  5. Apropos the “troubadour” Gil Scott-Heron, I’ve just read that his father passed away recently. Born Gil Heron in Kingston Jamaica on the 9th. April 1922 this man was what I’d call a real legend. A sporting all-rounder, not only did he excel at cricket, he the was also the first black footballer to play in Scotland (for Glasgow Celtic no less). Think about it. Glasgow in the early-fifties. The poverty, ignorance, violence, religious hatred, and into all that walks Gil Heron…. Amazing! By the way, he was also a poet and jazz musician… not forgetting his career as a photographer!!!!

Wow… I doff my cap to that man. R.I.P.

  6. Hi,
I’ve lost a track! Bobby Bland – Share Your Love With Me (#199) is missing from the boxnet.

There I was, settling into some heavy (but nice) music to accompany me on one of my periodic Yen Tzu “trips” when I noticed it…. strange.

    As Einstein said…
“no problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it”
    Okay??

    Like

    1. Ok..I’ll look into that..

Einstein…I always interpreted it as “mind-set that created it” but either way would it not suggest that themusicologist was unable to solve the missing bobby blue on boxnet issue?

      Like

  7. Not at all dear boy, not at all… what I ment was you’d probably need to think “outside the box” on this one. Thus, the Einstein quote.

And lo and behold…. I found #199. Not after #198 or before #200 but somewhere else on the tracklist…. after 001!!

It is I who needed to “up a level” on the problem… I believe it’s called lateral thinking!

  8. Thursday 2nd. April. The first beautiful spring morning of the year heralds the day here in the land of poets and thinkers.

At the moment I’m in front of themusicologist curve…. On AlternativeSoundTrack4 it’s like I’m hearing the music before its even played! Really!!

Why am I commenting here on the TrackList page?

    Two reasons..

    1. Because it will/should be read and considered in a historical context and not in the “heat of the musical moment”.

    2. Because this is really only of interest to lovers and students of The Mod Phenomenon so therefore appeals to a limited audience.

The Hustler was on general release in London round and about 1961. The music you’ve been laying down to it was also on release and being played at the same time. Right?

Well, and I doff my cap to your intuition (it couldn’t be experience as you’ve already said you wasn’t around at the time) the first three slices/plays were absolutely perfect, full on, Late Modernist music. Music which wasn’t anything like the boring, banal, stuff being served up by the monopolistic “authority” known as The B.B.C. but at the same time wasn’t the difficult “intellectual drivel” so loved of the middle-classes. It was music with something else; with something which hadn’t yet been named; it was music with SOUL i.e. jazz, and Blues, which was structured, orcastrated, with rhythm and a good beat and yet, in its own way, was still “easy on the ear”. I suppose you could say popular music. Popular before the word became “unpopular” that is.

And the strange, paradoxical, thing is/was that most of the Artists/musicians laying this “popular” music on us were Modernist icons (a couple of other names that spring to mind are The MJQ and Dave Brubeck. Later, the likes of Brooker T Jones would lead the charge of the second wave of SOULFUL JAZZ),

Late (or Post) Modernist is a term I’ve just hit on to nail/identify the group of kids who were NOT Modernists and didn’t YET know they were Mods (of tribal instincts, labels and propaganda, more at another time).

Anyway, getting back on theme, those three slices were perfect examples of Post/Late-Modernist Mod music. The music of a generation groping around looking for itself.

And then? The next three slices played on AlternativeSoundTracks4 were Barret Strong, Sam Cooke and The Shirelles. Again perfect; perfect examples of a generation that had found itself and found its collective voice…. You couldn’t have picked three better examples of Mod music if you’d been there.

The music of a generation found… Incredible!!

I’m generalising here but imagine it like this… The first three slices were getting “aired” in the cellar-like clubs. The second three were “jived” to in the dance-halls.

And finally, the puzzling thing is this…. All of this Modernist/Mod stuff happened simultaneously (and I’m not just talking music here)…. That is, and always has been, my quandry!!

I hope I haven’t lost you (or me) while meandering down this Mod’s memory lane. And I trust I haven’t bored you to tears.
Ahh, that reminds me of a song…. hahahahaha

    1. here you have graced themusicologist with knowledge of what is, for me, a key subject namely ‘Mod/ernist’. Why? because it is the font from which all that followed sprung and by everything I mean that which became known as popular culture.

Maybe those ‘kids’ were the real trailblazers because a few people an authentic movement does not make. Mod seems to have lost it’s original meaning due to the media portrayal of it but I imagine that for those who were there on the front-line the mention of it still makes the heart beat a little faster.

Thank you for taking the time to lay it down.

  9. Ooops, I left out the John Lee Hooker slice. Put it down to a “Freudian Slip”…. or better still… “poetic licence”.

  10. “Mod seems to have lost it’s original meaning”.

That’s it in a nut-shell. Mod and it’s original meaning. I sometimes wonder if Mod ever had a meaning!

As I’ve already said, I was there. Not only was I there, I was a “player”. And yet, what I find so hard to grasp, let alone explain, is the speed at which time and events passed. Time flew by. Events fell over themselves. Time and events tumbled into each other. Just listen to that music again. Jimmy Smith and then The Shirelles. What was going on???

It really is unbelievable to think of life just 50 years ago. The lack of simple everyday freedoms. Okay, it was a so-called free, democratic, country but many of those freedoms/choices were severly restricted or, even worse, such as with the freedom of expression “not up for debate”. Freedoms, which today are taken as given (or for granted if you wish), were repressed. I mean, today could you – would you even want to – explain the sexual mores of the age (think Profumo as openers and then move on to birth control wonder-drugs that caused horrific suffering) or hygine (locking terrified kids in Iron-Lungs as a treatment for Polio) or law-and-order (hanging). Okay, these are extremes one may say. And hey, who cares? Who give a monkeys fuck anyway? Oh, and as for Mods, what larger social changes are we to thank this small, local, insular, insignificent, hedonistic, bunch of self-opinionated working-class kids for…

Oh yeh. Well, let me tellya mister, the Mods (and the Mods alone) trampled down those walls of social graces and went on to shit all over the imposing bastion of class structures… Yes, that’s the Mod Meaning.

Fuck it, I’m off to the park before I really let of some steam…. Toodle-doo.

To quote another great Mod icon… “don’t start me talking, I’ll tell everything I know”
