Staying on board the Soul Train for this week as there are far too many cuts and artists who have yet to be featured..Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, James Carr, Sam Cooke, Teddy Pendergrass, Al Green, Aaron Neville, Bobby Bland, Solomon Burke and on and on and on in fact a year still wouldn’t be long enough to dig deep into the Soul Cellar so another week is the LEAST I can do.
Too many pieces to choose from…must have lined up at least 5 cuts…just as I’m about to prepare one a next piece floats out of the speakers to distract my butterfly mind. So without further delay hold this piece from one of the great duets Sam Moore and Dave Prater. So electric were they on stage that Otis Redding refused to go on after them. 1965 release on the Stax Label.

slipping out of the Wailers into a festive 60’s Soul cut courtesy of Jim Stewart’s majestic Memphis Rhythm & Blues/Soul shack…Stax.
From memory, (my wax is locked away while I navigate this period of transition), it was released (I have it on an Atlantic 45), in 1964. The singer is the beautiful and hugely talented song bird Carla Thomas whose voice melts my soul quicker than hot butter on breakfast toast. (Backed by Booker T and The MG’s).

It’s time to introduce the ‘Fat Man’ aka Minnesota Fats depicted in swaggering, nonchelant and fine style by Jackie Gleason.
Eddie has been ‘shooting stick’ in anticipation of Minnesota’s Arrival at 8 bells…Fat’s arrives and watches Eddie shoot, comments and ‘the game’ begins..
Just thought I would mention that Jackie Gleason shot pool regularly while growing up in New York and didnt need a stand-in so all his shots are his own…
The music is again from 1961, (trying as hard as I can to keep it tight), a Memphis Rhythm and Blues instrumental cut on the newly formed Volt label, a (subsidary of Stax), from a band called The Triumphs featuring Howard Grimes on drums, Marvell Thomas, (Rufus Thomas’s son), on the organ and piano, Lewis Steinberg on bass and the songs writer, original Stax engineer Chips Moman on guitar.

final cut of the freedom&protest…and what better way to finish with one of the greatest songs sung by one of the greatest singers. Sam Cooke’s original has already featured on themusicologist but couldn’t pass up this opportunity to throw it down again.
