 Jesus Children of America – Stevie Wonder

a personal favourite for themusicologist, RICH in memories of exposure to this set, Innervisions, as an impressionable 5 year old in 1973. Stevie was one of the BIG hitters on the stereo in them early years and Innervisions is a testement to the mans greatness, (having played and sung every part on this cut). I can almost taste the air of 1973 so strong and powerful are the connections.

the power of the networked society is in connecting to (re)build a society that serves us rather than enslaves us.

KNOWLEDGE is FREELY accessible yet current society is being engineered for us to consume (mis)information and infotainment.

In the information age it is critical that we take control of the networked communication channel otherwise it will continue to take control of US.

Frequently updating themusicologist would be a ‘walk in the park’ if it wasn’t for the narrative that accompanies each cut. I listen to music every day and am constantly turning up incredible slices of top drawer urbanemusicology. 45 years of listening to superb music counts for something and for me the knowledgehustle is what matters. NOT the medium it is on, it’s rarity, economic value or even the artist(s) involved. To be honest I don’t give a f**k about the category/label … do the combined frequencies and harmonies reach out and touch me or not is my ONLY concern. That said I appreciate that such details are important to some of the Cats out there and if that’s your bag…all power to you.

For the next few weeks I’m going to go small on the narrative and BIG on the music to get themusicologist back into the groove and always follow the Louis Armstrong maxim of playing “the good kind” of music.

Ike Turner Tribute #4

(Ghetto Funk – Ike Turner & Kings Of Rhythm)

over the past few days themusicologist has been involved in some heated, (internet), debate regarding the paying of tribute to Ike..not going into it here but one comment suggested that nobody would even know who Ike was if it wasn’t for his riding on the back of Tina’s talent !! hmmm..

now it’s one thing to try and tear his life to shreds with all kinds of personal insults, (scum/bastard..etc), but to disrespect his musical contribution is unforgiveable…someone even stated that he had wasted his life? how do they think his family feel about this abuse, and, make no mistake it is abuse.

all themusicologist is able to comment on is his musical contribution, which is huge and great. so here’s another fine piece from Mr Turner this time at the birth of Funk…taken from the 1969 LP A Black Man’s Soul.
