SoulBoy #15

(Sam And Dave – Goodnight Baby)

Staying on board the Soul Train for this week as there are far too many cuts and artists who have yet to be featured..Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, James Carr, Sam Cooke, Teddy Pendergrass, Al Green, Aaron Neville, Bobby Bland, Solomon Burke and on and on and on in fact a year still wouldn’t be long enough to dig deep into the Soul Cellar so another week is the LEAST I can do.

Too many pieces to choose from…must have lined up at least 5 cuts…just as I’m about to prepare one a next piece floats out of the speakers to distract my butterfly mind. So without further delay hold this piece from one of the great duets Sam Moore and Dave Prater. So electric were they on stage that Otis Redding refused to go on after them. 1965 release on the Stax Label.

  1. I don’t think I have ever consciously listened to Sam and Dave before, apart, of course, from “Soul Man” and “Hold On I’m Coming”, so this is a new pleasure. I am not surprised by Otis Redding’s attitude they were a real class act. A pity it had to end the way it did.

I have been working through your posts from the beginning and listening to the music when I can find it (YouTube is an amazing resource) and I am humbled that, considering how many correponents you have had, I am your first collaborator.

    1. Ian,
I know what you mean..Sam and Dave are not generally my cup of tea either…as a youngster growing up in the late 70’s/early 80’s I favored the New York and Chicago Soul sound over both Memphis and Detroit and that has continued as the years have progressed.

I am chuffed to hear that you have spent time on themusicologist archives..thank you and you’re right You Tube is an amazing resource…(all the music is on here though from #1). Thanks again for opening up the possibilities on themusicologist with the first collaboration maybe it will inspire others to get involved? any time you feel like contributing let me know.

  2. Yes, I found out from your reply to one correspondent that by changing the menu option you can get the complete list.
I have also been reading your posts and getting an idea of how music helps you in so many ways. I suppose I am lucky in that I rarely experience negative emotions, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t find music uplifting. I have several favourite pieces but some are “heavy” and I am not sure they would be to your taste.

    1. Ian,
priceless feedback..I suppose I take it for granted that the boxnet widget works as it should without having to change settings.
      heavy? like what?

  3. Ok, what do I mean by heavy. It started around 1990. I had always been a Jeff Beck fan, especially his jazz influenced instrumental albums of the ’70’s so developed an ear for instrumental electric guitar music. When I first heard Joe Satriani’s “Flying In A Blue Dream” album, I was blown away. Steve Vai’s “Passion and Warfare” soon followed, then Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore to name but a few. I have a few favourite tracks but anything by them is good. My daughter soaked all this up and, as a teenager, developed it into a taste for heavy metal. She then turned this back on me, so I now love anything by gothic metal bands Nightwish or Within Temptation etc. Now we are getting really heavy so I’d better stop.
By the way, the Boxnet widget always causes error messages about scripts running slowly. It could be my old PC or my broadband but I’m not sure.

    1. Ian….
Jeff Beck…know the name very well. He was a regular at my Grandad’s (Underhill), studio back in the 70’s and thereafter kept in contact with him. Nice fella and superb musicologist. Don’t know any of the other names and to be honest Rock is not generally my cup of tea although that is mainly to do with me not exploring it….too much Soul, Reggae, Blues, Rhythm & Blues, Gospel, Jazz, Boogie, Funk and such to keep my ears occupied. That said I am a guitar fan. Boxnet?? what browser do you use?

  4. I get the error message as well on my work & laptop computers. It says a script is causing Adobe Flasplayer to run slow and may cause the system to become unstable or summat.
Both these are not ancient tech but not bang-up-to-date,although I know I have the latest Adobe version.
    What a ‘gwannin’ … ?

    1. flash problems….what browser are you running? Occasionally I get that message and when ‘it’ asks whether I want to ‘abort the script’ I ‘say’ no and it never causes a problem in system stability. The only thing I can think of is the size of the files?? I try to upload them at 320.. is it a recent problem?
thanks for the feedback Don Steppa..speak soon, (when I get this f****n’ monkey off my aching back !) as The Lion says
“I wish somebody would come and ease my troublin’ mind” although really I know the only ‘body’ that can do that is me x

  5. Me too (same Flash 10 problem). I’ll try ignoring it. Report back if possible. If not possible then I’ve well and truly blown it!
Monkeys? Backs? Contempt. Deserve. Know what I mean?
here’s something special; enjoy it…. it’s from the heart and soul.

“You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while, we die. A spider’s life can’t help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.”

      monkey-back-contempt..yeah but deserve?…not sure.
Charlotte’s Web…the ‘essence’ is pure, deep and profound but this ‘existence’ is hard as nails sometimes.
is there an escape route? a ‘way’ out or is it all ‘sound and fury’?
when all you have is questions but sometimes desire answers it can be enough to drive you once more into the abyss from whence the I/self/ego crawls
      oh well….c’est la vie.

  6. Problems described by others are the same as I experience. Could be size of files but I don’t know how boxnet works. It’s just a niggle, not a real problem.

Back to music. From 1990 to 2006 I was listening almost excusively to instrumental guitar music . Then I read Ruth Brown’s obituary. What a loss to music she was. Atlantic – The House that Ruth Built, it got me back to listening to the recorded human voice again, and collecting as much as I could find, or afford of the Atlantic back catalogue. Ruth, Otis Redding, Solomon Burke and all the others. Even so, my favourite music is still electric guitar blues, Johhny Winter, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, and hundreds of others. I like to see where the music comes from and how it develops from one style to another. I guess I will have to start my own blog sometime, maybe when I retire. I haven’t read Charlotte’s Web so your previous posts kinda went over my head. Apologies if that sounds shallow.

  7. we get the same AdobeFlash player message, we click No and as far as we can tell it doesn’t cause a problem in system stability either..life can certainly be hard as nails at times that’s for sure, is there a way out of that? there certainly doesn’t seem to be no easy solution that I’ve found yet, and any ‘easing’ as you rightly observe seems only to come from the I…and there’s probably always gonna be more questions than answers when you’ve been born with a curious mind.I for one am greatful for that curious mind of yours.

  8. Yep, “existence” is shit if you dig deep enough. But it’s all we have.

And that says it all… but remember:

“I didn’t say it would be easy. I just said it would be the truth.” – Morpheus

And yeh, deserve, as a “word” is a bit too strong.

  9. I shall try saying “no” for a change … although lately in life that’s one word I have a distinct liking for, especially business-wise. Too many jarring people wantint ‘owt fer ‘nowt and then expecting you to throw in the shirt off yer back if you do say “yes”.
The only thing keeps me here is young Tarquin, once he’s sorted the world’s my Oystercard — will then put Plan B into action, that old dodge ’em all tactic better known as “The Runner” — ha-ha !!
