(Justin Hinds & The Dominoes – Save A Bread)

TOP RANKING 1967 slice of the Rock Steady pie for all the Financial Crisis sufferers out there. Recorded and released at and for Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle label, (backed by Tommy Mc Cook and the Supersonics)

Not that, (if you live in good old ‘Blighty’), savings are going to get you out of the egg ‘n’ bubble as the Interest rates tumbling to 0% doesn’t make it an attractive proposition at the moment, resulting in all of us taking the proverbial ‘kick in the bollocks’ while the value of everything crash and burn…I think it’s called ‘The PolitRicKs Of Fear‘…

Looks to me like the new age is apoun us and the strategy is “if you can’t swim then you’re going to sink”. Employment as we have known it is in it’s death throes and now a larger percentage of people have something to lose, (property for example), an updated form of, (wage), slavery is rearing it’s ugly head. I have no answers other than to let the music, (and your community), be your guide…so in the words of foundation Jamaican musicologist Justin Hinds

“Today can be gladness mister, (you don’t know),
tomorrow can be sadness sister, (you don’t know),
what makes the world go around, (round and round),
you’ll never know, (you don’t know),
so save a bread mister, (save it for the future),
save a bread sister, (’cause things will be better),
you know not the minute nor the hour, (man shall come),
you know not the minute nor the hour, (for the time is now),

what you know you know, (what you don’t know you don’t know),
greatest thing is to know, (what you don’t know you don’t know),
anywhere you go, (what you don’t know you don’t know),

Today can be gladness mister, (you don’t know),
tomorrow can be sadness sister, (you don’t know),
what makes the world go around, (round and round),
you’ll never know, (you don’t know),
so save a bread mister, (save it for the future),
save a bread sister, (’cause things will be better),
you know not the minute nor the hour, (man shall come),
you know not the minute nor the hour, (for the time is now),

what you know you know, (what you don’t know you don’t know),
greatest thing is to know, (what you don’t know you don’t know),
anywhere you go, (what you don’t know you don’t know),

  1. Great Jamaican music so far, but I can’t comment on this one ‘cos it ain’t on my box.net (yet?). Even so, the lyrics and your text are saying something very close to my heart… not to mention my wallet hahaha!.

Seriously though, these are very strange times indeed… it seems monetary “values” are transforming. It’s like the whole philosophy (scam to us peasants) is being turned upside down and inside out.

This beggars the question… why and to what end? I have a theory!!!!

By the way – and this problem has been building up for some time now – it’s taking a heck of a time for the box.net to download… and once it’s there, it takes just as long every time I click onto any of the other pages… it’s very frustrating! Can it be a question of too much content? Or is it just me? Or my poxy machine? Or the gremlins inside it perhaps….. Holy Shit!!!

    1. glad that you let me know..I had uploaded it on to my boxnet but not onto the widget !!

as for the length of time it’s taking for the ‘load up’ what browser are you using?

      anyone else having this problem?

  2. P.S. And my theory is not of the pessimistic “if you can’t swim you’re gonna sink” ilk…. It’s one based on real “values”, true “values”, good “values”…. not “face values”!!!!!!!!!!
And it’s achievable. And it’s one which ain’t new or clever…. It’s been around; it worked well for a long, long time. Until that is, we “people” got side-tracked (or led up the path) by the quest/pursuit of “wealth”.

  3. Browser… Firefox. But I’m changing soon! A good mate of mine in Berlin also mentioned the length of time taken “loading up”…. Anyone else?

Apropos “theory”…. I got a bit in front of myself there… the theory in question is on the “why and to what end”…. thereafter comes the debate on “practice”; the real “value” based society… Am I making sense?

Also, I omitted one very important word from my comment….. individual. That last sentence should read “Until, that is we “people” got side-tracked (or led up the garden path) in/by the quest/pursuit of INDIVIDUAL “wealth”.

    1. hmmm..doesnt happen on mine so there’s not much I can offer in way of a solution. What browser are you thinking of changing to?

are you making sense?..not to me !! other than the individual comment…

Adam Curtis made a series of scathing documentary critiques on the ‘Century Of The Self’ (among others), that it sounds like you would enjoy. Also Marx makes comments about the economics of the individual, (as a ‘good’ thing), if how I’ve read it is ‘correct’

    1. “GREATEST thing is to know” me auld china.
      A question regarding that line that I have always asked;
Was Brother Hinds referring to Knowledge in the philosophical sense as in ‘Know Thyself’? after all it continues to be a theme in Jamaican music. Just to lay one example on yers from the Luciano Killer, (or was it the Yami Bolo cut on the same rhythm?), no checked it and it’s the Luci piece.

“The greatest knowledge is the knowledge of God and Self,
      It surpasses material wealth,
Seek ye first wisdom ’cause that’s your health and strength,
It will preserve your soul until the end,…..”

That’s the first verse. The tune itself is called ‘Know Yourself’. The Yami Bolo masterpiece is called ‘Wipe It Out’. Pure ‘Steppers‘ from beginnining to end…marching tune, a call to arms for us to turn away from the path forced apoun, (no I haven’t got the spelling wrong), us by the comittee’s, institutions, corporations, so called think tanks etc… and another example of the power of music/song. One hit on the Yami piece and I’m ready to join ‘the ranks’ with it as the anthem….(thinking aloud,) the music of Jamaica is so often the voice of the people

nice to see you back on themusicologist
